MOUNT VERNON — A false alarm at Dan Emmett Elementary School on Thursday morning, around 8:30, forced the evacuation of staff members and early arrivals to the school.
Principal Margy Arck said no children were outside in the frigid temperatures for any length of time.
“We put some children in the modular,” she said, “and then a bus came in early, so we put some of the kids on the bus.”
The fire department responded to the alarm, but spent less than five minutes at the school. Chief Chris Menapace said firefighters checked the building and ascertained that it was a false alarm.
Arck said the alarm went off for an unknown reason and the alarm company has been contacted to determine what caused the smoke detectors to activate. The system will be tested when classes are not in session.
