MOUNT VERNON — Saturday night some Mount Vernon streets and driveways were set aglow with the nostalgia of holidays past as neighbors came out of their homes to light luminaries. The Lights in the ‘Hood event was held in the neighborhood including Club, Westwood and Southridge drives, Millstone Lane and some of Jenny Lane.
Though a cold night, there was a distinct warmth to the event. The luminaries, lights and homes were beautiful against the snow; and hot chocolate and chili at the Franz home warmed the neighbors who gathered. But as neighbors came out of their homes to walk around the community and enjoy the sites and greet one another, the warmth of community spread quickly.
The Mount Vernon News found it difficult to select a winner for the event because the effects were so varied and beautiful. Some homes were lit with electric Christmas lights, others had traditional brown bag luminaries, and there were also candles set in the snow and Ball jars and vases to hold candles.
But the new traveling trophy was awarded for creativity to Morgan and Marla Dague for the numerous ice globes they created by freezing water in balloons and bowls and setting lights and candles either under them or behind them.
