MOUNT VERNON — The release of a new book has re-opened wounds that were just starting to heal after the tragic murder of Stephanie Sprang, Tina Herrmann and Kody Maynard and the kidnapping of Sarah Maynard in 2010.
“The Girl in the Leaves” hit the bookshelf on Dec. 31, and shapes up to be — for the most part — a retelling of law enforcement investigation reports and news stories spanning the days from when Herrmann was first reported missing to the day Matthew Hoffman was sentenced to life in prison. However, there are passages in the book that do not correspond to any information presented during the investigation and are not attributed to anyone. This has caused confusion and emotional upheaval to some of those closest to the case.
