MOUNT VERNON — While every individual involved in fire and EMS departments is a hero to those they help, the Mount Vernon Fire Department honored some special heroes of 2012 on Friday night.
Twelve department members were recognized at the B&O Depot during the department’s first annual awards event.
When Chris Menapace became chief, he said had wanted to plan such an event but this year the time was right.
“We’ve had a couple of significant instances this year that served as a catalyst. We’re very proud to share this with you this evening,” he told the more than 60 people in attendance.
Twelve firefighters received either uniform ribbons or medals at the Class A, or dress uniform, event. There are 40 firefighters on the department’s roster and nearly all of them turned out to recognize their peers, though twice during the brief event crews had to leave to respond to calls.
