MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon City Council approved an emergency measure Monday night that will allow the fire department to hire three firefighters on a temporary basis until permanent positions become available through retirement.
Fire Chief Chris Menapace explained that three seasoned firefighters will retire in mid-March and he is required to wait until the positions become available to hire new personnel. This would leave the department short staffed and would require overtime to make up for the loss of the three men.
Once new staff is hired, there is a 90 to 120 day acclimation period where the qualified new hires become familiar with procedures and personnel of the department.
