DANVILLE — The Eastern Knox County Joint Fire District has acquired the latest in heart monitoring equipment, a Lifepak 15. The $31,162.80 monitor was paid for with a grant from the United Department of Agriculture that includes the price for a new tanker and associated equipment.
The department will eventually have three of the new monitors, one for each of their medical squads.
The monitors can check several functions of the heart and if necessary can shock the heart back into rhythm. While the squad is enroute to the hospital cardiac care center, Lifepak can transmit the heart rhythm plus levels of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide by cell phone modem.
There is also a $5,000 grant from the DOA for training and equipment.
The specifications for the new 1,900 gallon water tanker have been made with it scheduled for delivery this fall.
The EKCJFD firefigher-paramedics are training to use the new monitors.
