MOUNT VERNON — The Community Foundation of Mount Vernon & Knox County has announced a scholarship to engineering students from any four or five-year engineering school. The Wilbur F. Gaunder Engineering Scholarship is awarded annually to one or more Knox County students, of sophomore standing or later, enrolled at any four-year engineering college. The award, which provides more than $10,000 per year, is renewable as long as the student remains in an undergraduate engineering school and maintains satisfactory grades. Scholarship recipients are recommended to the foundation board each year on a competitive basis by a special review committee which includes area engineers.

“The community is appreciative of Mr. Gaunder’s desire to help individual engineering students from Knox County in a very significant and generous manner,” said Bruce Hawkins, chairman of The Community Foundation of Mount Vernon & Knox County. Gaunder was a graduate of Newark High School in 1925 and The Ohio State University in 1929. He was a member of the polo team while attending The Ohio State University.

He was employed by Pittsburgh Plate Glass in 1929, was plant manager at the Mount Vernon facility for several years, and advanced to the corporate office where he remained until retirement.

He was a former member of the Sub-Alpine Hiking Club of America, Mount Vernon Exchange Club, Mount Vernon Country Club, board of directors of Martin Memorial Hospital, and board of directors of Knox Community Hospital. He was a member and former elder of Harcourt Parish Episcopal Church and was a Knox County Red Cross volunteer.

He resided in Mount Vernon with his wife, Tomiris, and son, Allen who are both now deceased. Gaunder died Jan. 21, 1999, at the age of 92.
