MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon High School is the setting for “Seeing Red,” the first in a series of young adult novels written by Ann K. Shepherd. The seven-book series follows a group of Mount Vernon seniors as they progress through their final year of high school, experiencing joys and sorrows, adversity and serendipity, enmity and friendship.
Author Ann K. Shepherd, who lives in southern California, said she deliberated searched for a small town like ours in which to place her novels.
“I’m not really into big cities,” she told the News. “There are a lot of stories and television shows centered around big cities. I thought it would be really nice to do something in a smaller town, a smaller setting — something that was a little more like real life America. My family is originally from Illinois, so I thought I’d like to do something in the Midwest.
