MOUNT VERNON — A design architect met with staff at the city’s engineering department Thursday to go over details of the new maintenance building which will be built this year, Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Mavis told the News Friday. Details such as doorways, parking spaces, restrooms and particulars were examined to assure they will be designed to the advantage of the city’s needs. Plans should be finalized for the building soon and will go out for bids in February.

Three committee meetings are scheduled prior to Monday’s legislative City Council meeting.

Legislation will go before council Monday regarding a natural gas aggregation which expires in February. Council is expected to suspend the rules which will allow them to go out for bids from suppliers once again without waiting for three readings. A letter will be going out on Friday to residents currently on the city’s program and those who remained with Columbia Gas explaining the opt-out option. Those who selected other providers will not receive this letter. This committe meeting begins at 6:30 p.m.

Following at 6:45 p.m., council will discuss the renaming of portions of Blackjack Road and Blackjack Road Extension. The proposal is to rename the south leg Blackjack Road to Industrial Park Drive; and to rename Blackjack Road Extension on the west to Blackjack Road. If council approves the renaming, it would become effective in January 2014. “The numbers would be pretty much the same; it’s just the street that would change from Blackjack Road Extension to Blackjack Road,” said Mavis.
