MOUNT VERNON — Knox County Jobs and Family Services director Matthew Kurtz provided updates to the Knox County Commissioners Monday, noting that the jobless rate in Knox County increased slightly. Kurtz also discussed possible changes in state funding and the effectiveness of the county’s shared call center.
Kurtz said that the Knox County unemployment for December was up two-tenths of a percent to 6.2 percent; in November it was 6.0 percent.
“It was interesting to read an editorial this weekend about what unemployment extensions do to the motivation of workers,” he added.
At first it seems that people think, ‘Well, after all these years of working, I should take my time [on unemployment].’ Then, the longer they’re off work, it seems like getting up in the morning isn’t important to look for a job,” he said.
