MOUNT VERNON — Riding in the front seat is typically not an option for wheelchair-bound individuals; but now it is, thanks to Knox Area Transit.

When KAT transitioned from MOTA last year, administrator Hilary Patterson had to reapply for a vehicle contract for 2012. The process allowed KAT the opportunity to request a TESCO MV-1 vehicle.

They received the new vehicle in the fall. The MV-1 is the first light-duty vehicle designed specifically for wheelchair accessibility. And Knox County may be the first public transit authority to have the vehicle in their fleet because it became available after agencies had completed their state term contracts for 2012.

“I thought it was wonderful for our riders because they can ride in the front seat,” said Patterson. When she had to reapply their contract, she asked for the new vehicle.
