MOUNT VERNON — On Tuesday morning the Mount Vernon Police Department conducted a scheduled drug sweep at the Knox County Career Center and Mount Vernon High School.
Detective Cpl. Matt Dailey told the News the sweep on high school property was a “success” and there are a few students who will be looking at charges.
Knox County Assistant Prosecutor Aaron Allard has not received the reports as of this morning, but said he expects charges to be filed. Allard expects there to be at least two cases against juveniles brought to his office.
City Law Director Chip McConville said he hasn’t seen the reports either, but expects one case to be sent to his office. McConville would handle any cases against individuals 18 years or older.
Steve Short, Mount Vernon schools superintendent, said Tuesday’s sweep will not be the last one conducted this year.
“We’ve chosen to do multiple sweeps,” he told the News. “We will continue to work with the police department on searches and do our best to make sure students believe it when we say drugs are not permitted on school property.”
Mount Vernon Police Department is part of the METRICH drug task force.
