MOUNT VERNON — Meals, transportation, home services, activities and other amenities are enjoyed on a continual basis by senior citizens all across Knox County. Individual nonprofit groups providing services to seniors depend chiefly on funds generated each year from a Knox County senior levy fund, generated through property taxes and distributed by the Knox County Board of Commissioners.

Prior to 2012, a senior levy advisory board contacted the local senior service providers to determine their annual need and would then make their recommendations to the commissioners based on each agency’s needs and request. [The advisory board] would get the applications and would meet with the organizations and then come back with recommendations for funding,” said Knox County Commissioner Teresa Bemiller. “Now we haven’t said that we will not put that back in place. We have talked about that and may talk about it more.”
