MOUNT VERNON — On Jan. 26, Country Club Retirement Campus held its annual Community Pie Baking Contest. Participants were asked to bake pies consisting of original crusts and fillings for judging in the Fruit and Nut, Custard, Diabetic and Staff categories.
Eighteen pies were judged and graded on areas such as crust, filling and presentation by Bruce Kreidler, Knox County Career Center chef instructor; Roger Reynolds, CCRC administrator and Heather Allen, CCRC activities director.
First-place winner, Mary Cline, entered her Wild Blackberry & Raspberry Pie in the Fruit Category. Best Overall pie award went to Pam Neighbarger with her custard Red, White and Blueberry Pie — winning a 12-piece Paula Dean cookware set. Barb Snow, activities associate at CCRC, took home prizes for her Apple Pie in staff category. Placing second and third with her Pineapple Pie with Walnut Crust and Coconut Custard Pie was Jean Barker.
