MOUNT VERNON — Local U.S. Post Offices will not undergo visible changes as the result of the planned elimination of Saturday mail delivery, a U.S. Postal Service spokesman said.
Calls to local postmasters about what impact the plan will have on them were referred to David Van Allen, regional spokesman for the U.S. Postal Service.
Van Allen said the plan will eliminate between 20,000 and 25,000 positions, but no layoffs are anticipated.
“We’ve been carrying a lot of open positions,” he said, explaining that between that, retirements and transfers to other positions, layoffs should not be needed.
Carriers work a 40-hour, five-day week, he said. For each five routes a “floater” is assigned who rotates through the routes, therefore giving each carrier a day off.
