MOUNT VERNON —A Mount Vernon Nazarene University student was arrested on campus on Jan. 28, after making threatening remarks to other students.
Collin S. Leitz, 24, Willard, was removed from campus and charged with aggravated menacing.
Students at MVNU received e-mail correspondence encouraging them to take safety precautions in the wake of the incident. Director of Campus Safety Patrick Rhoton told the News that students were being reminded to “be careful and secure their things.”
“We’re encouraging faculty to lock their doors when students are in a classroom so that somebody else can’t get in,” said Rhoton. “With all the stuff going with the acts of shooters on colleges and campuses, we’re going to be doing some training for active shooter training just to make people aware of the things they can do if there were an act of a shooter on campus.”
According to court reports, the incident occurred on Jan. 23. A warrant was issued for Leitz’ arrest on Jan. 28. During a Jan. 29 arraignment hearing, Leitz entered a not guilty plea. He was released on his own recognizance. He has a court trial set for Feb. 27, on three counts of aggravated menacing.
