FREDERICKTOWN — Resources. Producers. Consumers. Assembly line. Quality control. Profits. Goods and services. Marketing. Believe it or not, these are all concepts being taught and learned in first-grade classrooms at Fredericktown Elementary School.
Economics is now a state standard for first grade, and the Fredericktown teachers developed a creative and fun way to teach the relative concepts.
Each of the four first-grade classes — those of Megan Bender, Heather Brake, Robin McClay and MacKenzie Shaw — made a different Valentine craft using gum and candy. They then marketed the product and had the chance to become consumers themselves during last week’s buying and selling time.
McClay’s class made Valentine butterflies. First-grader Alayna Aurand said the pupils used an assembly line technique: One group traced and cut out the paper hearts, one group cut the antennae in half, one group attached the stick-of-gum body and one group wrote messages on the wings.
Class members explained some of the concepts involved when the News visited McClay’s classroom.
