MOUNT VERNON — Malaya Sherman accepted her trophy for winning first place at the AmeriCheer Winter Open National Championship in Columbus on Feb. 9.
The trophy will go on the shelf with all her other cheerleading trophies. There are almost too many to count.
Malaya’s title is the latest in a career that includes dozens of regional titles, team awards, place ribbons, medals — and six national titles.
Malaya has even been honored with a resolution at the Statehouse — and she will receive another one later this year.
It’s all in a day’s work for the 9-year-old Mount Vernon star.
“I love to cheer,” Malaya, a fourth-grader at Pleasant Street Elementary, told the News. “I get to express my feelings when I’m out there. I’m not like when I have to hold it back at school.”
