MOUNT VERNON — The 23 contestants in the 2013 Distinguished Young Women contest enjoyed the first of their service club luncheons, mingling with members of Kiwanis Club on Monday at the Alcove.
The 23 contestants were scattered around the room, two or three to a table with Kiwanians, to promote meeting and talking with each other.
“It’s a chance for the girls to get out and interact with community leaders,” said DYW State Chair Cheri Butcher.
Noting that this is the 55th year of the program and 40th year in Mount Vernon, Butcher said she is proud of how Mount Vernon has embraced the program. She said that by the end of the week, $18,500 in scholarships will have been awarded and said that for the last five years, the Ohio representative going on to the national contest has attended college on full tuition and sometimes room and board scholarships. These scholarships were earned due to the girls’ participation in DYW.
