MOUNT VERNON — At its meeting Monday, city council gave only a first reading to the resolution approving the 9-1-1 call center consolidation plan, but approved a resolution the increase admission fees at Hiawatha Waterpark/Pool.
At a hearing before the regular meeting, council members raised several questions about the 9-1-1 plan, but at the end decided, since they have the time, to hold another hearing at the March 11 meeting to give the public more opportunity to ask questions or express their opinions.
Council has a deadline of April 12 to act on the consolidation issue.
Law Director Chip McConville explained that the consolidation plan has three basic rationales, the most important being that economic projections show that, with the present structure, the 9-1-1 system will be operating at a deficit by 2016, based on the income projected for the levy that supports 9-1-1. Consolidation will allow the same job to be done with fewer staff. Instead of two centers with two dispatchers at each, one center will have three dispatchers.
Response time will be improved by doing away with call transfers between the centers. All cell phone calls to 9-1-1 currently go through the center at the sheriff’s office, and those that need to go to the city dispatchers have to be transferred.
