MOUNT VERNON — A home burned this morning on 8 Oak Lane, just off Wooster Road. The Mount Vernon Fire Department got the call about 5:30 a.m. to the Don Bouchard home. Julie Bouchard awoke and heard glass breaking and discovered the fire in front of the home on an enclosed porch.
Bouchard was at work on his night shift at the Mount Vernon Developmental Center, but Mrs. Bouchard got out safely. Getting fire equipment and water was a major problem because Oak Lane is a private drive that dead ends off Arden Lane.
The department emptied several fire truck water tanks but was not able to extinguish the fire. The department resorted to setting up a portable water tank at the entrance to the drive and pumping water through a hose about 600 feet down the lane, around a corner, to engines pumping water on the flames.
At 8:30 a.m. the fire crews were again able to start pumping water on the fire.
With four-inch hose laid back to the fire, College Township’s 2,000-gallon water tanker and an engine with 750-gallon capacity were able to supply enough water to fight the fire. They used a Mount Vernon fire hydrant on Wooster Road for their supply. The fire was contained by 9 a.m.
Kelly Brenneman and Judy Smith of the American Red Cross were on hand at the fire. Brenneman said they are getting together with the Bouchards later today to help them with their needs.
