MOUNT VERNON — Pope Benedict XVI’s resignation on Feb. 28 made history and the selection of the next pope will be followed with interest by Catholics all over the world, including in Knox County. Father Victor Wesolowski of St. Luke Catholic Church in Danville explained.
“I think there’s always interest. It’s a worldwide historical event,” said Wesolowski, “He’s not some guy off in Rome somewhere who has no affect on our lives. He’s the successor of Saint Peter.”
He further explained that, for Catholics, when Jesus said, ‘You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church ...” he was appointing Peter the father of his earthly church.
“We look at Peter as the Father,” said Wesolowski, “and “pope” means “papa.” And the pope is also the Bishop of Rome, the leader of the worldwide Catholic Church; and that includes the Catholics in Knox County.
