MOUNT VERNON — An annual report from the public assistance unit of Knox County Jobs & Family Services was heard by the Knox County Board of Commissioners on Monday morning. Public assistance administrator Carla Poland along with Knox County JFS Director Matthew Kurtz shared statistical information about the department from 2012.
“Reviews are down,” said Poland, explaining that these are now done every year instead of every six months. As many as 3,692 reviews were performed in 2012, with July being the highest month at 454.
A breakdown was shown in comparing year-to-date totals among the different categories of public assistance. “Food assistance has slowed down,” said Kurtz, in sharing information in the categories of food stamps, two-parent assistance, single-parent assistance, two parents with one disabled and general assistance ability. “That’s partly because of the economy,” he said. “It looks to us like our assistance roles are down somewhat over the peak they were in the 2010-2011 time frame. We’re thinking that’s because of the increase in jobs we’re seeing and the better job picture in Knox County.”
