MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon City Council members agreed to sign a letter of opposition regarding a low-income housing development for the city’s east side.
A large number of residents voiced their opposition to a proposed housing development on Upper Gilchrist Road during Monday night’s public meeting at City Hall.
The proposed development will offer 84 low-income housing units.
“We were surprised by Woda’s request for support,” said Councilwoman Nancy Vail. “I think we were surprised and concerned. That was reinforced by the comments from the community.”
The Woda Group addressed council earlier this year asking for support of their project under a very tight deadline. Council and city administration both declined to support the project without knowing more details.
The city has since received a letter from the Ohio Housing Fund requesting a letter of support for the project.
