MOUNT VERNON — Three friends, all seniors at the Knox County Career Center, headed off after school Monday to check out a site on the Mohican River near Brinkhaven to shoot a video.
It’s a rocky area, with some swift current and deep water. David Sovine, 18, of Mount Vernon, said he was walking on the rocks when he just tripped and fell in. The water was cold, he said, “but not too bad.” The problem was he got caught in the current, which pulled him under once. Then his friend, Phillip Nichols, 18, of Mount Vernon, jumped in and helped him out of the current. Another friend, Austin Fields, 18, of Amity, helped pulled them both out of the water.
David said he didn’t know how deep the water was there, “Maybe 10 feet,” he said.
He also said they didn’t have a specific idea for a video; “We just like to have fun with it,” he said.
David’s mother, Tina Sovine, said the boys told her they have a video of it, but she didn’t want to see it.
“Besides, it was mostly under water,” she said.
When David fell in, he had the waterproof video camera attached to his wrist.
