CENTERBURG — The Centerburg Board of Education on Monday issued formal commendations to both the seventh-grade girls basketball team and the seventh-grade boys basketball team, along with their coaches, for winning the Mid-Buckeye Conference seventh-grade championship.
The rest of the meeting, Treasurer Ellen Scott told the News on Tuesday, was largely routine.
Regarding personnel, the board granted the retirement requests of fourth-grade teacher Timmie Holly and of elementary reading instructor Marsha DeWinter, both effective May 31. Holly has served the district for 35 years and DeWinter has 30 years of service. Ethan Copley was employed as a custodian, retroactive to March 1, Walter Waldnig was hired as a substitute custodian and supplemental contracts were issued for assistant track coaches Dean Albrecht, Mike Eblin and Kathy Higgins. Sheri Stoyle was approved as JV softball coach and Dawn Colopy as a softball volunteer.
In addition to approving routine fiscal actions, the board accepted a $3,000 donation from the Community Foundation of Mount Vernon & Knox County for a 21st Century Classroom project. The money will be used to purchase 20 or so ChromeBooks to run Google Apps in the classroom. It also accepted an $800 donation from Ariel Corp. and $26.40 from Aetna/Gina Litzenberg-Poydras to the high school and $182 from the elementary PTO for the purchase of cameras at the elementary. It also renewed membership in the Ohio School Boards Association and contracted with HAWA Consulting Engineers for an engineering study of the elementary and high school chilled water systems.
Other actions taken by the board included the passage of a resolution objecting to the expansion of the governor’s Educational Choice Scholarship Program and the approval of the Spanish Club trip to Costa Rica in June 2014.
Because the board is considering rehiring retiree Marsha DeWinter, the public will have an opportunity to express its opinion on the rehire candidate at the April 8 board meeting.
