MOUNT VERNON — Today will mark the end of an era for three local paramedics as they embark on their final day of duty with the Mount Vernon Fire Department. Mike Cronin, Jake Frederick and Rick Cantrell will retire after 30 years of service.
While losing three tenured employees at once may not be that unusual, these three men have one unique distinction — they are the last of seven paramedics hired in 1983 after coming over to the fire department from Knox Community Hospital, as the paramedics all had previous stints at Mercy Hospital and Martin Memorial Hospital. The former Mercy Hospital is now the home of the Knox County Service Center, and The Living Center now occupies the former Memorial Hospital. Knox Community Hospital provided ambulance service in Knox County prior to the MVFD assuming these duties.
The team of paramedics at KCH was discontinued and a vote by city residents approved for EMS services to be provided by the local fire department.
