MOUNT VERNON — Work at Phillips Park is completed, except for some cleanup, and the park will be ready for the baseball season, Mayor Richard Mavis reported.

City Engineer Cameron Keaton said the concrete bunker-like structure left from the old sewage treatment plant has been removed, along with old piping, including an old sewer line that carried overflow from combined storm and sanitary sewers to the river. It hasn’t been used in years, Keaton said, but the Environmental Protection Agency wants such lines removed to prevent any chance of sewage getting to the river.
