BLADENSBURG — The Bladensburg Sertoma Club and the East Knox Lions Club joined forces to provide a video magnifier so East Knox kindergarten pupil Reagan Tokasz has the assistance she needs to access reading and other classroom materials. An enthusiastic student who loves to read, Reagan is visually impaired and by the end of the school day was experiencing eye fatigue. A consultant was brought in and made the recommendation for an Acrobat LCD video magnifier for Reagan to use in the classroom. The Bladensburg Sertoma Club and the East Knox Lions Club donated funds towards the purchase of the equipment.
The equipment arrived in mid-January and Reagan and her teacher Jamie Taylor have been exploring the various ways to use the equipment for lessons. Reagan’s classmates also benefit during reading time from this equipment because Reagan likes to share with her classmates. They share their reading books using her equipment from time to time. Reagan’s classmates also had to be taught about this equipment and it was explained that this is tool to help Reagan with her school work. This equipment can be mobile if need be to travel to various environments. This equipment should have the life expectancy of about 12 years if taken care of properly.
Reagan recently helped educate representatives from the Bladensburg Sertoma Club and the East Knox Lions Club in using her the new visual equipment for the classroom. Student Services Director Corby Frere said Reagan was like a pro showing the representatives how to use her new equipment.
“She has a remote control that helps with zooming in and out on objects either at her desk or across the classroom. She showed them how she uses the camera to point towards objects she needs to look at,” Frere explained. “The adults marveled at how well this little girl was able to navigate and explain how to use the equipment. This piece of equipment has changed this little girl’s life in regards to accessing her reading materials and looking at objects within the classroom. It has opened up a new world of exploration for this kindergartner. ... Many thanks to the wonderful people who serve that have made this all possible for our kindergarten student at East Knox Local. We have a very generous community and we are thankful.”
