MOUNT VERNON — Reports of individuals going door-to-door in the Grandview Trailer Park and Fredericktown areas asking to demonstrate a carpet stain remover turned out to be vacuum cleaner salesmen.

Sheriff Dave Shaffer said the sheriff’s office received reports of two men, in a white or white and brown van, approaching homes with the offer saying they were opening a business in the area. The caller reporting the incident said they provided no business cards or literature about the business.

Information was later received that the men were selling Kirby sweepers so Shaffer said he called the group’s headquarters and advised them to give their workers proper paperwork and photo identification.

Door-to-door sales people should have identification. If they don’t have identification and other information, collect as much information as possible, including a license number.

Inside the city of Mount Vernon, they must have a permit from the mayor’s office to solicit door-to-door.
