MOUNT VERNON — The News was contacted by a Mount Vernon woman who received a phone call from someone claiming to be from Microsoft, telling her they wanted to assist her with necessary updates on her computer. She said she hung up on the caller and performed an Internet search for Microsoft where she found a webpage warning about scams using company names fraudulently.

It states that Microsoft does not make unsolicited phone calls, does not request credit card information to validate a copy of Windows and does not operate a “Microsoft Lottery” as some would lead you to believe.

If you believe you were contact by a scam artist, contact Alan Reed at 397-5333 ext. 246, so the News can warn readers of other potential scams in the area.
