MOUNT VERNON — Chickens are a growing business in Knox County. When Jim and Martha McDonald set up their broiler operation in 2008, news stories mentioned two other broiler operations, both near Danville.
Today, there are nine broiler operations and a layer facility. No registry is kept of the operations, as they all fall short of being big enough to invoke the oversight of the Ohio Department of Agriculture’s Livestock Environmental Permitting Program and the Confined Large Animal Feeding Operation regulations. They have to house 125,000 birds to trigger those regulations.
