MOUNT VERNON — Volunteering has brought a new sense of purpose to Everett “Buddy” Gasbarro’s life.

Disabled since a serious accident in 2001, he took care of his mother for a number of years. Since her death in 2011, he has been working to take back control of his life.

He got off the steroids and narcotics he had been taking after multiple surgeries (including two knee replacements), quit smoking and drinking, improved his diet and lost 120 pounds.

“It was hard work, because I can’t do a lot of exercise,” he said.
