AMITY — When Delores Zeller visited Amity Cemetery on Wednesday, she discovered that the marble angel which had adorned the top of an infant sister’s grave, had disappeared.

“It is ‘poured’ marble, it’s not worth anything to anyone but us,” Zeller said. “We just want it back.”

The angel was not attached to the stone, as it had been the victim of vandalism before, she said. It had marked the grave of her sister, Beatrice Burgess, since she died at the age of 6 months in 1968.

When she discovered the theft, Zeller said, she called “every relative, every cemetery worker” to see if anyone knew anything about where the statue might be. She finally called the Knox County Sheriff’s Office and filed a theft report.

“It had to have happened in the last two weeks,” she said.

The odd thing about the theft, she said, was that a plastic angel that a sister had placed between their father’s grave and their sister’s, had been set up in place of the marble angel so you couldn’t tell from the road that the statue was missing.

If anyone knows anything about the statue; if they have seen it somewhere or know something about it, they should call Delores Zeller at 507-8940 or her sister-in-law Toni Burgess at 397-5005.
