MOUNT VERNON — Since the Public Library of Mount Vernon and Knox County has had some ongoing problems with a very small group of individuals, it has contracted with a security service to patrol the main branch, inside and out.
“A relatively small number of people can cause huge problems,” executive director John Chidester said. “The vast majority of people who come to the library are perfectly fine human beings. But, there are some small distinct groups who come here, not for the usual, legitimate purposes of coming to the library, but just to essentially make trouble.”
Chidester said the biggest motivation in hiring security is that some patrons stopped going to the library because they didn’t feel safe.
