MOUNT VERNON — Earning National Merit scholarship recognition is one of the most prestigious honors awarded in high schools across the United States. Mount Vernon High School seniors Miranda Huang and Casey Long have achieved this honor.

“It’s pretty exciting to be a finalist,” said Huang, the daughter of Jennis Jacobson and Jim Huang. “I’m really glad that I was able to achieve this. I’m getting a scholarship from whatever college I decide to go to.”

Huang is thinking of majoring in biology and her first choice would be Whitman College in Walla Walla, Wash., because, she said, “they have a great environmental studies program.”
