  • Vaughn Wiester, conductor of the Columbus Famous Jazz Orchestra, opened the music scholarship fund’s annual concert Saturday with his trombone. The concert, in the Memorial Theater, also featured a set from the Mount Vernon High School Mellow Jackets of which Wiester was a member. Jordan Shremshock, the 2012 scholarship winner, also entertained the capacity audience with part of Christopher Willibald Gluck’s “Orfeo ed Euridice” and a popular song, “Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered.” style=

  • The Hiawatha Water Park/Pool in Mount Vernon got some rehab work Saturday from the Advanced Resurfacing firm in Florida that updates and repairs pools. From left, Tom Smith and Kevin Blazetic, the firm’s repairmen, worked with Scott Zimmerman, foreman of the Parks Department, in replacing a gasket under the surface of the entrance to the tube slide. The two men were at the pool last year installing a mat at the children’s slide. style=
