MOUNT VERNON — The first of many award ceremonies for the current academic year at Mount Vernon High School took place Thursday evening at the high school cafeteria when the Kiwanis Club of Mount Vernon conducted their 51st annual scholastic recognition program. Program chairman Jerry Simon welcomed those who had gathered for the program. Rev. Dr. John Capper gave the invocation, and current president Cindy Higgs gave the official welcome, speaking of the many projects the Kiwanis have taken on to help those in our community. “We appreciate all those who do support as we give back to the community,” said Higgs.
Guest speaker was senior Lily McBride, who told of her many fond memories during her years at Mount Vernon High School. “We have found comfort in the fact that we were all doing the same things. Whether we aspired to be doctors, musicians, hairdressers or chefs, we can abide with those who make the world a better place,” said McBride. “I sincerely hope we can all look back at our four years of high school and smile at the memories we made and what we learned here.”
