MOUNT VERNON — Thirty years ago, on May 9, 1983, Geoff Oliver was hired to be the city’s Public Buildings and Lands superintendent. Friday, he retired from what he describes as the job that became a career.

“I’m looking forward to it,” he said of retirement. “I’d like to say I’ve accomplished everything I wanted to, but I don’t think anyone can ever really say that.”

What he’ll miss, he said, is the people he’s worked with and the many friendships that developed.

The respect and affection people have for him was apparent at the retirement party Friday afternoon at City Hall.
