MOUNT VERNON — A number of individuals received special recognition at the Mount Vernon school board meeting on Monday, and out-going superintendent Steve Short was among that number.

As his parents, son, Nathan, and wife, Laura, looked on, board president Margie Bennett announced the establishment of the Stephen J. Short Scholarship Fund by his friends and colleagues in acknowledgment of his service to Mount Vernon students. The perpetually-endowed fund will be managed by the Community Foundation of Mount Vernon and Knox County, with the income to be used to provide scholarships to graduates of Mount Vernon High School, beginning in 2014.
