MOUNT VERNON — The paintings and collages of Ohio artist George Schroeder will be on exhibit in Mount Vernon Nazarene University’s Campus Gallery, located in the R.R. Hodges Chapel/Auditorium. The show runs from Oct. 15 through Nov. 25, with a reception on Sunday, Oct. 18, from 2 to 4 p.m., that is free and open to the public.
Schroeder has exhibited paintings for the past 50 years, collages for the past 30. His paintings are abstract, with recent canvases combining precise geometry and knife-sharp edges with improvised, sometimes roughly handled surfaces in which many layers of paint are employed to achieve the final effect. His collages employ found papers, often with an insouciant, ironic edge. Through attention to detail and the idea that art can be found in the outside world, he strives to give viewers a rich textural experience.
Beginning in 1962, Schroeder taught at Hiram College for more than 40 years, after receiving his Master of Fine Arts degree in painting from Kent State University, until his retirement in 2003. He taught a wide range of art history and studio courses and served for many years as department chair, and led art history study tours in western Europe on 14 occasions.
Highlights of his exhibition record include solo shows at the Maison de la Culture d’ Orleans in Orleans, France, in 1983 and the Kentler International Drawing Space in Brooklyn, New York, in 1999. His most recent one-person show was at the Downtown Gallery of Kent State University in 2006. Notable among the collections in which he is represented are the Canton Museum of Art, Canton; the Progressive Corporation in Mayfield, Hiram College; and the Cleveland Indians.
Regular gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Evening and weekend appointments can be scheduled by contacting MVNU Art Gallery Curator Lori Wilkes at 397-3573. For more information about MVNU’s galleries, visit www.mvnu.edu/art.
