DANVILLE — “Half Broken Horses” by Jeannette Walls is the selection of the Danville Public Library’s Adult Reading Discussion on Tuesday, Feb. 8, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Café 505 (formerly Lu Lu’s Café and Bistro), 505 S. Market St.

The discussion is rescheduled from Jan. 11 due to inclement weather.

“Those old cows knew trouble was coming before we did.” So begins the story of Lily Casey Smith, Jeannette Walls’ no-nonsence, resourceful and spectacularly compelling grandmother. By age 6, Lily was helping her father break horses. At 15, she left home to teach in a frontier town riding 500 miles on her pony, alone, to get to her job. She learned to drive a car and fly a plane. And with her husband, Jim, she ran a vast ranch in Arizona. She raised two children, one of whom is Jeannette’s memorable and unforgettable mother, Rosemary Smith Walls, portrayed in Walls’ memoir, “The Glass Castle.”

Elizabeth Carpenter, manager of the Danville and Gambier libraries, will lead the discussion. Copies of the book may be checked out at the Danville Public Library. This program is free and open to the public.
