MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon Nazarene University will hold three Winter One-Act plays with performances on Thursday and Friday, Feb. 3-4, at 8 p.m., and Saturday, Feb. 5, at 1 p.m. From directing, acting, costumes, sound, lights and stage managing, MVNU students are responsible for every aspect of the Winter One-Acts. All shows will take place in Thorne Performance Hall located within the R.R. Hodges Chapel/Fine Arts Center. All tickets are general admission.

The first play is “Oh What a Tangled Web,” a comedy by John Carroll in which a young girl impulsively makes up a story and hilarious complications ensue. Suddenly in need of an excuse, the girl blurts out that there has been a death in the family. The only thing wrong in the family, however, is that the cat is missing. Friends and neighbors visit, expressing concern and sympathy while the parents think they’re referring to the missing cat.

Cast members include Hannah West (Reedsville), Brittany Maurer (Conneaut), Michael Weaver (Gahanna), Bronwyn Mroczkowski (Howard), Valerie Hohmann, Lydia Kuhn (Celina), Mark Bailey (Princeton, W.Va.) and Danae Pohly (Hartville). The one-act is directed by student Adam Behr (Mount Vernon) and assistant director Danae Poholy.

Up next is “The Fig Connection,” by John Franzen and Kathy Siebert, a wild espionage spoof in which the Russians are out to capture English scientist Sir Isaac Newton who is about to invent a secret weapon — gravity. “The apples are in the tree tonight and you’ll be up a tree if you miss the Fig Connection,” mumbles a mysterious-looking character in a trench coat. It appears that Russian spies have infiltrated London in order to locate Newton’s hidden laboratory. The action that follows is fast and furious as six Russian spies, Doc, a mysterious Mr. Big and the beautiful but deadly Sonya consider every conceivable plan to get hold of Newton’s secret.

“The Fig Connection” is directed by Ben Wong (Fairfield) and assistant director Lauren Craft (Paulding). MVNU’s cast includes Amber Plaatje (New Carlisle), McKenzie Vaughn (Westerville), Nick Dillon (Pickerington), Megan Berk (Ada, Okla.), Matt Vecchi (Xenia), Veronica Grimm (Pomeroy), Jaclyn Altman (Lexington), Kathryn Vasquez (Munroe Falls), Sarah Madtes (Mount Vernon), Rachel Elder (Lebanon), Roseanna Gatton (Bellville), Sara Hargett (Lancaster), Bethany Thacker (Granville), David Braun (Sugarcreek) and Jenn Krell (Mifflinburg, Pa.).

Audience members will also enjoy “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along One-Act” based on “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog,” created online by Joss Whedon. According to Whedon, “It’s the story of a low-rent super-villain, the hero who keeps beating him up and the cute girl from the laundromat he’s too shy to talk to.” “Dr. Horrible” made its first public appearance at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2008 and has since become a fixture of modern pop culture.

Students Justin Tackett (Defiance), Ashley Saunier (Centerburg), Zac Sherman (Ashland), Sam Hansen (Loudonville), Rebekah May (Cadiz), Andrew Megimose (Pickerington) and Annelise Mason (Toledo) round out the cast. Seth Werling (Westminster, Colo.) is the director, and Bethany Widmar (Broadview Heights) is assistant director.

Reservations can be made at 397-9000, ext. 1620, or tickets may be purchased at the door. For more information about MVNU, visit www.mvnu.edu/news.
