MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon Nazarene University Jazz Band will present its spring concert on Monday, May 2, at 7:30 p.m. in the R.R. Hodges Chapel/Auditorium. The community is invited to attend this free event.
The 17-piece big band under the direction of Rick Brunetto will present a varied program. The music of Count Basie’s “One O’Clock Jump” and Buddy Rich’s “Channel One Suite” will showcase the swing era sound of the great big bands while the music of Steely Dan’s 1980s hit “Peg” will highlight more contemporary jazz. In addition, vocalists Jennifer Krell and Mark Bailey will sing “In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning” and Frankie Valli’s “Can’t Take My Eyes off of You,” respectively.
The Jazz Band is one of seven instrumental ensembles at MVNU. They perform their own fall and spring concerts and join with the other ensembles in various events including the annual May gazebo concert. Members represent a variety of academic majors and denominational backgrounds.
