MOUNT VERNON — “Olivia Twist” will be presented Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the Mount Vernon High School theater, 300 Martinsburg Road. The dark, yet heartwarming tale of Olivia Twist will be presented by the Mount Vernon High School Drama Club.
Imagine this poor, homeless young girl who is plucked from the streets by a rich philanthropist and taken to the Happy Harmony Home for girls. In this home, if Olivia were to say “please ma’am, may I have some more?” the owner, Miss Doriana Fagan, would offer a second (or even a third) helping, calling her a “sugar plum delight.”
What’s not to like about the Happy Harmony Home for girls? Nelly’s routine consists of three meals a day plus snacks, Francie’s of television watching, Melanie’s of dreaming of boys, and Pee-Wee’s and Geraldine’s of doing anything they like, as long as it doesn’t make them feel stress or damage their self-esteem. But something is amiss in this happy and harmonious home. There’s a danger that none of the orphan girls could anticipate, a mystery tied up with a portrait of Doriana.
When some boys from the Admiral Nelson home sneak over to the Happy Harmony Home in the middle of the night, they seem to have taken the risk just to ask the girls to join them at school for their favorite classes, gym and English. If the girls agree, the boys will have some pretty faces to look at, and the girls will have some handsome gallants to ogle. The question is, will Doriana allow it? Performances are Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Tickets may be purchased in the lobby of the MVHS theater before all performances.
