MOUNT VERNON — In preparation for National Women’s Health Week, May 8 through 14, the Knox County Health Department is hosting a Healthy Happy Hour on Tuesday from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at Allison’s Finer Diner located at the corner of Coshocton and Upper Gilchrist roads.
This is the second year for Healthy Happy Hour which is for women only, ages 18 and up. The event will include health displays, informational tables and services for women such as facials, manicures, pedicures and chair massage. There will be items for sale by local women including jewelry and other accessories. Admission is free, but reservations are required. Healthy Happy Hour will also include a presentation by Kathy Wayne of Johnstown on safety for women including self-defense techniques. Wayne has been teaching safety for women for more than 10 years. She and her husband, a retired police officer, have created a self-defense program for women called STAT (Survival Tactics & Attack Techniques Ltd.) The safety program will begin at 6:30 p.m.
Appetizers and non-alcoholic beverages will be served free of charge during Healthy Happy Hour. Alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase.
The purpose of Women’s Health Week is to empower women to make their health a top priority. With the theme “It’s Your Time,” the nationwide initiative encourages women to take simple steps for a longer, healthier and happier life. Nationally, WHW is coordinated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office on Women’s Health. In Ohio, Women’s Health Week activities are funded by the Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Prevention Program with the Ohio Department of Health, Bureau of Health Promotion and Risk Reduction; and The University of Toledo Health Science Campus Area Health Education Center.
