MOUNT VERNON — Billed as “America’s oldest 19th century theater,” Mount Vernon’s Woodward Opera House has seen thousands of entertainers and lecturers throughout its nearly 160-year history.

The story of the Woodward, past and present, will be the topic at the Wednesday meeting of the Knox County Historical Society museum, 875 Harcourt Road, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

The Wednesday evening program will be presented by Aubrey Brown and Charles Kindel. Their illustrated talk will highlight the construction, the unusual architectural features, and some of the performers and speakers who have appeared there since the early 1850s, as well as details of the current restoration project which is aimed at bringing the Woodward back to its early splendor.

Brown, a native of Fredericktown, is a 2008 graduate of the College of Wooster, majoring in archaeology and anthropology. For the past year, she has been conducting research on the Woodward and other historic properties in Knox County.

Kindel presently serves as treasurer of the Woodward Development Corp. For the past 15 years, he has been gathering information and photographs relating to the Woodward’s history, and has been one of the visible volunteers and tour guides for visiting groups and events.

The program is free and open to the public, and all persons interested in local history are invited to attend. For more information call the museum at 393-5247.
