MOUNT VERNON — The new First Friday’s Lyceum Series continues on Friday at 7 p.m. at ThePlace@TheWoodward, 111 S. Main St., with Dr. Peter D’Onofrio, who is president of the Society of Civil War Surgeons, editor of its quarterly publication — The Journal of Civil War Medicine — and learned about traumatic injuries first hand as a professional paramedic.

D’Onofrio will discuss the difficulties Civil War doctors and surgeons faced in a time when most doctors learned their trade as apprentices, rarely had traveled far from home or witnessed the types of injuries they were to encounter daily on the battlefields.

The Civil War is often considered the first modern war and resulted in the highest number of U.S. casualties of any of the country’s wars with approximately 620,000 men perishing, including 360,000 in the North and 260,000 in the South.

Doors open at 6 p.m. and the program starts at 7 p.m., and all these programs are presented on a donation basis.

For more information on this program or the entire series, call 392-6102 or 392-3018.
