MOUNT VERNON — The most important thing one can say about Will Rogers is that he was a political commentator who showed that you needn’t be vindictive nor alienating nor poisonous in your statements, just comment and make your point in a non-abusive way; something no longer seen nor heard in today’s politically charged world.

Will Rogers, portrayed by Chautauqua veteran Jim Stoner, never finished school and started performing in Wild West shows and as part of the Ziegfield Follies and on to silent movies. His career broadened beyond the realm of show business. He wrote 4,000 syndicated columns and six books and became a prominent radio broadcaster and political commentator.

Opening the program is another Chautauqua favorite, the Dante Sisters — Lynn Jurkowitz, Susan Kahrl, Susan Moreland and Mary Dye — singing songs of the Will Rogers era.

Rogers will appear at ThePlace@TheWoodward, 111 S. Main St., on Thursday at 7 p.m. This event is available on a donation basis. For more information call 393-6102.
