MOUNT VERNON — Come celebrate Independence Day in downtown Mount Vernon on First Friday, July 1, from 6 to 9 p.m.
Entertainment will include the Kokosing River Surf Club on the Main Stage on Public Square and a cruise-in around the square. Bring the kids downtown for Sophia’s Petting Zoo, Balloon Sculptor Rex Naylor, a bounce house, and free child identification cards with photo and fingerprints will also be provided.
A cornhole tournament continues on the northeast area of the square. For information and team sign-ups, contact Krystal Drye at 399-5122. Stop by the Heritage Centre Association table to get a Lucky Duck entry packets for the Rubber Duck River Race at the September First Friday; details at www.VisitDowntownMountVernon.com.
Food will be provided by Flapper’s Bar & Grille, Henry’s Copper Curry, The Family Diner, The Alcove Restaurant, Woolson’s Kettle Corn and Lemonade will be on the west end of the square along with an ice cream cart from Dairy Queen Grill and Chill.
Teams can also sign up for the fourth annual season-long volleyball tournament behind The Dan Emmett Conference Center on Howard Street beginning at 5:30 p.m.
Other attractions will include a new Lyceum featuring the Lincoln-Douglas Debate with members of the Mount Vernon Players beginning at 7 p.m. at ThePlace@TheWoodward; Woodward Opera House tours from 6 to 8 p.m.; and Ma & Pa Karaoke on the FirstMerit portico.
Across the street in front of Herald’s Appliances and Electronics will be a Yamaha Vino 125 Scooter, displayed for raffle by Star Riding and Touring Chapter 480. The proceeds from this raffle support the local chapter and also support Star’s pet charity “Feed the Children.” The drawing will be Aug. 25 at Mid-Ohio Suzuki-Honda-Yamaha-Kawasaki.
Mad Cap Center will have a magician and puppet art projects, Gospel Supply Shop will have a book signing by author Kim Howdyshell from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. MVNU’s Schnormeier Gallery will host a joint exhibit for July, featuring work from artists Tyler Bohm and Steven Bush.
In case of rain, stop by the Buckeye Candy Building where the live music and restaurants will set up inside.
City fireworks display will take place at Memorial Park at dusk.
